An Account of Surprising Generosity: When a Student Let Me Sleep on Her Dormitory Ground

Back in 2006, My journey took me to Canberra for an admissions interview for medical school. I figured to book lodging upon arrival, yet upon reaching the city, a big convention was happening and every single budget hostels and budget accommodation were fully booked.

Hailing from Singapore, the idea crossed my mind the possibility of spend the night at the airport – only to discover Canberra airport, not like the one back home, does not operate around the clock. Not knowing what my next move should be and feeling increasingly desperate, I caught a city-bound bus and found myself drifting near the casino, believing I might spend the evening in an establishment that was open 24/7. This was not ideal in the best shape for acing a crucial interview the next morning, yet, as a student on a tight budget, luxury accommodation was impossible.

Our society requires more people with such compassion.

It seems I seemed confused as a young woman noticed me walking aimlessly through the city and wondered whether I needed help. I shared my situation and right away she suggested I could sleep on the ground of her dormitory at the Australian National University – which was perfect, as that’s where the important interview would take place the next morning. She even offered me some free dinner: a leftover filled rolls she had from her part-time job. I was able to use the bathroom and a protected spot and safe to spend the night.

Looking back, I now understand the significant risk she accepted as a young woman letting a guy she had only just encountered sleep on her floor. At that time I operated under my male privilege bubble and not even thinking to the potential danger. As a dad now, I’m amazed she offered that help – and remain very grateful.

Ultimately, I did not study at the Australian National University, and I lost touch with her again, yet her memory has stayed with me that incredible gesture of generosity. It is my wish life has rewarded her generosity abundantly. We could all use more individuals with such compassion.
