California's Governor Confirms He Is Evaluating a Presidential Campaign for 2028

The California governor, a leading Democratic figure, has indicated that he plans to decide on whether to launch a presidential campaign in 2028 once the 2026 congressional elections are over.

"Absolutely, I would be lying if I denied it," the governor remarked when asked about contemplating a campaign for president post the 2026 ballots. "It wouldn't be the truth. And I can't do that."

Newsom's tenure as governor concludes in the start of 2027, and he cannot run again. Yet, he noted that any determination is not imminent.

"The future will decide," he added.

Increased Visibility as a Political Adversary

The California governor has stepped forward as a notable adversary of the former president's team, using his digital presence and advocating for a initiative that would increase the party's representation in Congress in following redistricting by Republicans. This action has drawn criticism from adversaries.

Clash on Transportation

The former president's secretary of transportation, Sean Duffy, alleged that Newsom shows no concern about Californians in a Sunday interview on a major news network. Duffy announced plans to cut taxpayer dollars from the state and warned eliminating the authority to issue trucking licenses.

"I intend to cut $160m from the state," he stated, following a recent fatal crash in the state involving an undocumented semi truck driver that resulted in three deaths and four injuries.

His administration pointed out that the federal government had renewed the driver's employment repeatedly, which permitted him to secure a CDL under U.S. law.

The transportation secretary had before stated he was withholding additional funds from the state for failing to implement English language requirements for CDL holders.

Strong Response from the Administration

"Former D-list reality star, now Secretary of Transportation, continues to misunderstand U.S. regulations," the governor's team retorted in a recent comment responding to the secretary's comments. "Meanwhile, unlike this clown, we focus on reality: California CDL holders had a death rate nearly 40% lower than the national average. Texas – the sole state with a larger number of CDL holders – has a rate markedly elevated than the state. Facts don't lie. The Trump administration does."

Polling Data and Political Future

A recent survey found that a majority of the party and a significant portion of the electorate indicated that the governor must consider running for president in 2028. In recent years, Newsom's favorability has risen to an mean of a third from previous levels, while his disapproval has decreased from an average of more than 40% to 38.4%.

In previous months, Newsom remarked while visiting several battleground states that he had "no idea" about his intentions for 2028.

He noted his past difficulties, including being found to have a learning disability at the age of five.

"The notion that a individual who got 960 on his SAT, who still struggles to read scripts, who was typically not at the front – that such a possibility is discussed is, by itself, extraordinary," he said. "No one can say? I await who steps forward in the next election and who answers the call. And that's the question for the voters."
