Democrats Criticize Trump After He Claims They Should Face Execution

Democratic officials voiced anger after the ex-president accused a group of Democratic congress members of being "traitors" and declared they should be arrested and penalized "by death" following their publication of a controversial video.

The Message That Provoked the Controversy

The video footage, shared on Tuesday, includes six Democratic lawmakers who in the past served in armed forces or intelligence positions.

"Like us, you all made an oath to protect and uphold this constitution," the officials stated in the 90-second video. "And right now, the threats to our constitution are not only from overseas, but from right here at home. Our regulations are explicit, you can reject improper directives, you can decline illegal orders, you have to decline improper directives. No one has to follow orders that violate the statutes or our founding principles."

Trump's Furious Reaction

The video message appeared to trigger a angry reply from the former president.

On Thursday morning, Trump wrote on his social media platform: "This constitutes SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these betrayers to our Country should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."

In a separate message, he declared: "This is really bad, and Risky to our United States. Their words cannot be permitted to persist. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"

In a subsequent message, he stated: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, liable by DEATH!" He also reposted a statement that said: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"

Party Representatives React

Following Trump's remarks on that day, Top Democrats published a combined announcement condemning the statements.

"Political violence has no place in this nation," they stated. "Representatives who appeared in the video all worked our United States with exceptional loyalty and excellence. We strongly condemn Donald Trump's offensive and risky threats of violence against elected officials, and urge House Republicans to vigorously do the same."

The Democratic leaders also said that they had been in communication with protective services "to ensure the protection of these representatives and their loved ones."

"Donald Trump must immediately delete these unhinged digital publications and retract his dangerous discourse before he leads to violence," the declaration stated.

Representatives' Firm Reaction

The representatives who participated in the video also released a declaration.

"We identify as former service members and national security professionals who love this nation and swore an pledge to defend and defend the founding document of the United States," they stated. "That oath lasts a lifetime, and we plan to maintain it. No warning, intimidation, or promotion of aggression will deter us from that important duty."

"The most revealing aspect is that the president views it punishable by capital punishment for us to repeat the legal requirements," they continued. "Military personnel should understand that we have their support as they carry out their vow to the founding principles and duty to obey only legal commands. It is not only the correct thing to do, but also our duty."

They stated: "All citizens must come together and denounce the former president's calls for our death and ideological conflict. This is a time for ethical certainty."

More Partisan Responses

The Senate Democratic leader also censured Trump's statements and shared on online networks: "It's important to understand: the former president is requesting the death of government members."

He added: "This is an direct THREAT. Every Senator, each house member, every American – regardless of party – should denounce this without delay and absolutely."

The Conservative official justified Trump's assertion that the Democrats had engaged in "treason", labeling the video as "wildly inappropriate", stating: "It is very dangerous, you have leading members of Congress instructing military personnel to disobey orders, I think that's without precedent in American history."

The GOP official also allegedly informed media outlets that in what he examined of Trump's posts, Trump was "explaining the violation of sedition" but that "legal experts have to examine the language and decide all that."

Executive Branch Response

During a White House press conference on that day, when questioned by a reporter, "Is the president want to execute elected officials?", the executive branch representative answered: "Certainly not."

"We should understand about what the ex-commander in chief is addressing," the spokesperson stated. "We see current representatives of the American legislature who coordinated to arrange a video message to individuals of the national defense, to serving soldiers encouraging them to defy the executive's proper directives."

She added: "The integrity of our armed forces rests on the hierarchy, and if that system is violated, it can lead to people getting killed, it can result in confusion, and that's what these congressional representatives ... are basically encouraging."
