The acclaimed police drama Line of Duty will make a comeback for its seventh season, confirmed by the broadcaster.
A brand new six-episode season written by the show's creator will begin filming in Northern Ireland this spring, as confirmed by the network.
Vicky McClure expressed excitement about the comeback, saying she was "so excited" about the show's renewal. Her co-star remarked, "How wonderful it is to know that the Three Amigos will be reuniting together soon."
The previous season concluded in 2021 with a final episode that attracted over 17 million viewers. Rumors about a new season have been widespread for some time, but confirmation only came this week.
The seventh season will open with the anti-corruption unit no longer existing and renamed as the new police oversight body, as revealed by production details.
Steve Arnott, Kate Fleming, and Adrian Dunbar's part remain working to tackle misconduct within the law enforcement.
The team's mission "faces unprecedented challenges", and under these circumstances, these officers are assigned their "most sensitive case so far."
An additional officer, Det Insp Dominic Gough, described as a charming officer celebrated for busts of criminal networks, faces allegations of misusing his authority to act as a offender.
However, this investigation could be a intentional diversion from a larger danger still active in the shadows, the teaser suggested.
In a statement, Jed Mercurio said: "Everyone involved are deeply thankful to the show's fans."
"It's an honor to have had so many followers watch the developments of the unit over six previous seasons and we are thrilled to be coming back for a new season."
He added: "Corruption in this country is supposed to have ended while Line of Duty was off air, so I've been forced to use my creativity."
The Scottish actor called being part of the police drama as "the role of a career".
"Not only the show's success but the people I've worked with I now call dear friends."
"I'm excited to wear the uniform again and get the team back together," he added.
The Nottingham-born actress remarked: "Obviously I'm very happy Line of Duty is returning! Eager to work with Jed, Martin and Dunbar again. The city, we'll be there shortly!"
The veteran actor commented: "While anticipating the AC-12 days of Christmas, how exciting it is to know that the Three Amigos will be back filming soon."
"Pleased with the news and anticipating those mercurial twists and turns."
Line of Duty premiered in the early 2010s and evolved into one of the most popular TV dramas of the last decade, attracting notable actors such as Kelly Macdonald.
The BBC haven't revealed exactly the new season will hit screens.
The finale of series six drew the extended plot about the hunt for criminal mastermind known as "the mysterious H" to a close, and the creative team said at the moment there were no intentions for additional seasons.
However, the network announced on Tuesday that a new season is now being produced.
