New York City Mayor Eric Adams to Endorse Former Governor Andrew Cuomo in New York City Mayor's Election

New York City Mayor Eric Adams declared his intention to support Andrew Cuomo in the upcoming mayoral race, despite an extended period of strained relations between the pair of Democrats.

An Unexpected Turnaround After Recent Criticism

Only weeks ago, the mayor had publicly condemned Cuomo, describing him as a ā€œsnake and a liarā€ and alleging of having ā€œa career of pushing Black candidates out of races.ā€ However, in a new statement, Mayor Adams changed his position, stating he now plans to campaign alongside the former governor in communities where he holds strong support.

ā€œIt is crucial to energize the Black and brown communities that have suffered from urban displacement on how important this race is,ā€ the mayor commented.

The mayor further explained, ā€œResidents have seen their rents increase in terms of neighborhood changes and they have been ignored in those areas, and I’m going to go to those communities and speak one on one with organizers and groups and I’m going to walk with the former governor in those areas and get them involved.ā€

Election Landscape and Current Developments

The mayoral contest has so far been dominated by the contest between the former governor and progressive candidate his main rival, whose rise in the polls has attracted attention internationally and represented aspirations for a rejuvenated progressive wing of the Democrats.

In a latest mayoral debate, both the democratic socialist and Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa stated they would reject Adams’s endorsement if offered.

Earlier this year, Adams had begun his re-election campaign as an unaffiliated candidate after facing federal corruption charges which were later dropped in return for his assistance with federal immigration raids across New York City.

At an unrelated press conference on the same day, Adams answered reporters asking about the endorsement plan by saying, ā€œI'm meeting Andrew later today.ā€

This development came a day after the two politicians were spotted attending a game side-by-side at the New York Knicks’ season opener at the famous arena, which took place immediately following a heated candidate debate.
