The Details Known About the Those Lost of the Bondi Beach Terror Attack

A minimum of 16 individuals lost their lives and in excess of 40 sustained injuries when attackers opened fire at a Hanukah event at Bondi Beach, an attack local authorities have called a terrorist attack.

As of the newest reports, officials have stated the death toll stands at 16, encompassing one of the alleged attackers. Additionally, 42 people with injuries were transported to medical facilities.

The deceased are yet to be officially identified, but police believe their ages span from 10 and 87 years of age.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.

Known as a father-of-five, he was the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and acquaintances spoke of him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How is it possible that a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a family member asked.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the birth of their newest son in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, according to his wife.

She told the events leading up to the shooting, stating they had been standing together when the gunfire erupted. “He moved to protect me because he wanted to stay near me,” she recalled.

The pair were both Holocaust survivors, having faced immense hardship in their childhood. They had later immigrated to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

French foreign ministry have announced that French national Dan Elkayam is among the dead.

Publicly, the Foreign Minister declared that France stood with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This cowardly attack is a fresh and tragic example of a revolting outpouring of antisemitic hatred that we must eradicate,” the statement continued.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was taken to the Sydney Children’s Hospital is among those who had died, police have confirmed.

One Israeli Citizen

One victim from Israel was among those killed in the incident, as per multiple sources citing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people transported to hospital, many are still under care, with a number in critical condition. Those hurt include two officers who responded to the attack.

A wounded man is a bystander who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the gunmen. Described as a hero, he sustained bullet wounds but is recovering well in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. It has been reported he was hurt and is receiving treatment in hospital.

He wrote, he described the scene as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also noted the actions of those who rushed to help. He stated he believed it was a “miracle” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was also injured in the shooting. He said he heard “dozens and dozens” of shots.

“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I sustained a gunshot wound. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
