Whenever a significant awards ceremony draws close, there’s always a clamor for the addition additional classifications to acknowledge unsung work and satisfy the passions of enthusiasts who have specialized interests.
A fellow writer has already made for a horror game category. That would rule. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, this being a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist when I prioritize because like all dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request stands as crucial and significant. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create a category for puzzle games.
Categorizing Game Types
Classifying creative works is not a science; it remains highly personal, and it will always generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. There’s a reason film award organizations don’t do it. However, it represents a necessary evil for the industry of interactive entertainment, that demonstrate such variety they barely qualify a single creative category.
For the full spectrum of interactive entertainment excellence to gain proper attention, while allowing diverse titles to have a chance for representation, genre categories are essential.
Present Award Structure
The major gaming awards offer these award types recognizing Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these award types effectively encompass numerous genres, making space possible for most games within them.
Different situation exists for brain-teasing titles. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Consider three of outstanding current releases, all very different: building puzzles of one title, intense tile-matching from another release, engaging interpersonal challenges of a third title. What category would fit them among existing types? Nowhere, that’s where.
Recognition Challenges
Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games published annually lacking appropriate categories at major award shows, unless they happen to qualify for categories like Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging small studio competitions.
- One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated in any category during that awards season
- A different innovative game received no nominations that year
- Well-received sorting experience got ignored in 2021
- Just some puzzle games barely qualified for independent or mobile categories
Importance of Logic Titles
Frequently they represent small games, however the design of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games stand as most engaged experiences in the world continuing this trend for an extended period.
The legendary block-stacking game rivals popular creative games for the title of best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.
The Solution and Justification
Logic titles wouldn't face that issue. It would be easy to populate five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.
And to reiterate, these are games that otherwise have no home at major gaming awards. Logic title developers function at the demanding boundary interactive creation, developing some of most fundamental forms of gaming itself. Just like film action specialists, they deserve recognition. Let’s not keep them waiting decades.
