Three Lions Coach Reveals The Philosophy: For England, the Jersey Must Be a Cape, Not Protective Gear.

A decade ago, the England assistant coach was playing in League Two. Currently, he's dedicated on helping Thomas Tuchel secure World Cup glory in 2026. His journey from athlete to trainer started with a voluntary role with the youth team. He remembers, “Evening sessions, a partial pitch, organizing 11-a-side … deflated balls, scarce bibs,” and it captivated him. He realized his calling.

Rapid Rise

Barry's progression has been remarkable. Beginning in a senior role at Wigan, he developed a reputation through unique exercises and great man-management. His stints with teams included top European clubs, and he held roles with national teams for Ireland, Belgium, and Portugal. He's coached legends including Thiago Silva, Kevin De Bruyne, Cristiano Ronaldo. Now, with England, he's fully immersed, the peak as he describes it.

“Dreams are the starting point … Yet I'm convinced that passion overcomes challenges. You envision the goal and then you plan: ‘How can we achieve it, day-by-day, step-by-step?’ Our goal is the World Cup. But dreams won’t get it done. We have to build a systematic approach that allows us to maximize our opportunities.”

Obsession with Details

Obsession, focusing on tiny aspects, characterizes his journey. Putting in long hours day and night, he and Tuchel challenge limits. Their strategies include player analysis, a heat-proof game model for the finals abroad, and building a true team. He stresses the England collective and avoids language such as "break".

“You’re not coming here for a holiday or a break,” he explains. “We had to build something that the players want to be part of and where they're challenged that going back is a relief.”

Ambitious Trainers

The assistant coach says and the head coach as extremely driven. “We aim to control all parts of the match,” he states. “We want to conquer the entire field and that's our focus most of our time to. We must to not only anticipate of the trends and to lead and innovate. This is continuous with a mindset of solving issues. And it’s to make the complex clear.

“We have 50 days alongside the squad ahead of the tournament. We must implement an intricate approach that gives us a tactical advantage and explain it thoroughly in our 50 days with them. It’s to take it from idea to information to knowledge to execution.

“To create a system that allows us to be productive in that window, we have to use the entire 500 days we'll have since we took the job. During periods without the team, it's vital to develop bonds among them. We have to spend time communicating regularly, we need to watch them play, sense their presence. If we just use the 50 days, we have no chance.”

Upcoming Matches

The coach is focusing ahead of the concluding matches in the qualifying campaign – against Serbia at Wembley and in Albania. They've already ensured their place at the finals after six consecutive victories without conceding a goal. Yet, no let-up is planned; quite the opposite. Now is the moment to strengthen the squad's character, to maintain progress.

“We are both certain that the style of play should represent everything that is good about the Premier League,” Barry says. “The fitness, the adaptability, the physicality, the integrity. The England jersey must be difficult to earn yet easy to carry. It ought to be like a superhero's cape not protective gear.

“To ensure it's effortless, it's crucial to offer a style that allows them to move and run as they do in club games, that connects with them and encourages attacking play. They should overthink less and more in doing.

“There are morale boosts available to trainers in attack and defense – starting moves deep, attacking high up. However, in midfield in that part of the ground, we feel the game has become stuck, particularly in the Premier League. All teams are well-prepared these days. They know how to set up – structured defenses. We are focusing to focus on accelerating the game in that central area.”

Thirst for Improvement

Barry’s hunger for improvement is relentless. While training for the top coaching badge, he was worried about the presentation, since his group included stars like Lampard and Carrick. For self-improvement, he went into the most challenging environments available to him to hone his presentations. Such as Walton jail in Liverpool, and he trained detainees for a training session.

He completed the course in 2020 at the top of the class, and his dissertation – The Undervalued Set Piece, for which he analysed numerous set-plays – got into print. Lampard included won over and he hired Barry on to his staff at Stamford Bridge. After Lampard's dismissal, it said plenty that the club got rid of virtually all of his coaches except Barry.

The next manager at Stamford Bridge was Tuchel, and shortly after, they claimed the Champions League. After Tuchel's exit, the coach continued under Graham Potter. But when Tuchel re-emerged with Bayern, he got Barry out from Chelsea to work together again. The Football Association see them as a double act like previous management pairs.
