UN:Me: A Psychological Horror That Blends Survival Horror and Among Us Mechanics

The recent Day of the Devs online presentation revealed several intriguing future games, but one in particular has captured attention: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player adventure appears to fuse together the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill title with the paranoid deduction core of Among Us.

"This is a distinctive game where a girl harboring multiple personalities inside her must escape from a labyrinth of the psyche," explains developer Yasukazu Kawai.

Stepping Into a Shattered Mind

In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed heroine who appears to be of high school age. Inside her exist four distinct personas, each with unique fears and motivations. These souls can take over at will, unleashing their innermost terrors upon her without warning.

Judging by revealed gameplay, much of the action takes place within a eerie hospital, while other scenes depict the protagonist navigating a abandoned church.

A World of Personal Horror

"What are you fearful of? What causes you uncomfortable?" poses game director Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Small rooms. Authority figures. Elements that seem trivial to others can trigger something primal inside us. This game explores that concept — fears that are unique to every individual."

The central mechanic involves controlling whichever soul surfaces at any given time. However, these souls will switch against your will during gameplay. During exploration, each soul's fears become amplified and attack the protagonist one after another. When the soul changes, so does the specific fear the player encounters.

Unsettling Aesthetics and a Deadly Choice

Initially, UN:Me shares noticeable aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill series. The setting is filled with orderlies all sporting the same face, with disturbingly broad smiles. Figures in the lobby have enormous flowers growing from their heads should be. Floral motifs are an ever-present theme, contrasting organic elegance with unnatural horror.

Yet, UN:Me introduces a unique mechanic. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four souls inhabiting the protagonist is the "real" one. "All four personas asserts that the body is rightfully them," notes a developer. "During the game, you must determine who is authentic."

Once players have deduced a persona is an impostor, they are forced to destroy it. But, since each soul can lie or hide the reality, it is very easy to make a mistake.

"Maybe you've already destroyed the real [soul] with your own hands," a voice states. "The last one standing might be a fake. Either way, your choices are final."

UN:Me does not yet have a confirmed release date, but it is available to wishlist on platforms.
